Why Azimuth Sailing?
An azimuth is a concept in celestial navigation that signifies the bearing of a celestial object from your position. I remember the first time I stood a night watch by myself. It was also the first time in my life that I sat and really studied the night sky. Through the course of the night, I felt like I experienced the rotation of the earth as the stars slowly marched their way across the sky. It was an unforgettable moment in my life that both gave me both an overwhelming sense of my insignificance and such a sense of power on this spinning planet.
About Me
My sailing career started on dinghies in Berkeley California and has led me to race and work as far as the Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Florida, Hawaii, up and down the West Coast from Puerto Vallarta up to Haida Gwaii in British Columbia. I have held a USCG 50 T Master’s license since 2018 and began teaching sailing and delivering yachts in 2012. I hold ASA and US Sailing Instructor Certifications up to Advanced Coastal Cruising, and have formally taught sailing on boats 14-50ft at Sailing Schools across the Bay area. I was formally Assistant School Director at Modern Sailing, and also have a background in Composite Tech and deployment at Saildrone in Alameda, CA.
I have extensive ocean racing and cruising experience on boats in the 30-80ft as captain, watch captain, and navigator in races like the Tranpac, PacCup, VanIsle 360, Oregon Offshore, Big Boat Series among many others.
I have had a lifelong fascination with weather, and in addition to my experience I have taken courses on weather, weather routing, and amateur forecasting. I am experienced navigating and routing using both Expedition and Open CPN.
